A Quick Guide for Dressing Efficiently at the Airport

Ok, so after reading some listicles and “how-to” articles, I feel like it’s time to lay down some truth about what is most efficient when you enter any airport on this earth. Sure, I’ve seen online articles tell you to dress comfortably and post pics of celebs in their designer garb. However, I have yet to see someone write about the grime you feel walking through security barefoot, or about the multiple uses of sweaters. So here I am, condensing my experience into an online post about what to wear at the airport.

1. Use Protection, Wear Socks

When going through security, depending on the airport and your clearance, your shoes will need to be removed. This means that you will be walking on multiple days worth of feet, dirt, food, and god knows what else. Have I scared you yet? Well have no fear, let me introduce you to socks! An easy barrier between you and the ground, wearing socks will keep your feet away from the cold tile and sticky rubber matts. Grab yourself a pair of unicorn socks, and walk through security with no regrets!

2. Complex Shoes

I get it. We all want to look great, and those shoes with the buckles, straps, bells and whistles are going to totally make your outfit. But please, for the love of travel, pack them for once you land!  Not only does having complicated shoes slow down the security line, you will then need to grapple with altitude. As humans get higher in the air, the increase in cabin pressure causes our feet to swell. When your feet start to hurt because you tied/strapped/glued your shoes back on too tight after security, you will want to take off your shoes. Listen, I don’t care who you are, that airplane full of people and recycled air do not need to be exposed to your feet. So for the sanity of yourself and others, wear some easy simple shoes with some give to them.

3. Be Quicker with Less

Avoid slowing down the security line by simplifying your outfit. Wearing excessive amounts of  jewelry, wearing multiple layers, or wearing clothing with many pockets means adding on time where you are taking everything off and then putting it all back on when you are done with screening. If you are like me and don’t always give yourself a lot of time to get to the gate, shaving off those extra seconds by dressing minimally will may be the difference needed to get to your flight.

4. Don’t Underestimate the Versatility of a Sweater

Doesn’t matter if it is hot or cold, bringing a sweater on the plane is always a good idea. Not only is it great for the unpredictable temperature of the inside of a plane, but it can also be repurposed for sleeping! Bunch it up/fold it up for a pillow (extra points if your sweater is thick and you roll it up to make a neck pillow), or use it as a makeshift blanket. Not to mention that if you are unsure of the weather at your destination, it doesn’t hurt to have your sweater out so that you don’t need to open up the suitcase you so meticulously packed.

5. Stretchy, Loose, and Comfy

Let’s be real: airplane seats can be really uncomfortable, so why wear something that is also uncomfortable? Go for clothing that has some stretch, or more of a loose fit. Wearing those jeans that look great while standing but when sitting it cuts into your stomach is not the way to exist on a 3+ hour flight.

These are some loose rules, as someone will always find an exception. These quick tips come from my experience on multiple trips. Hopefully reading this will make your next trip to the airport that much smoother.

Now get out there and catch that flight!
